Providence proposing gun buy-back program

Posted: Updated:

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Tragedy, Providence is leading an effort to hold a statewide gun buy-back program, to try and get as many guns off the streets of Rhode Island as possible.

The idea to get a gun-buyback program going was put out by Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and it's an initiative that Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare is 100-percent behind.

The program already has support from other city leaders across the state including Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.

Commissioner Pare says that any effort to try to get unwanted guns off of Rhode Island's streets, must be tried.

There's no firm date for the program yet.

Commissioner Pare hopes it will happen as early as January.

Pare says that it's likely that a gift card will be offered in exchange for any weapons collected at the buy-back.
