PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee has nominated a former prosecutor in the state and neighboring Massachusetts to lead a new state board overseeing public and higher education in the Ocean State.

Chafee on Saturday announced that he has picked Eva-Marie Mancuso to be the chairwoman of the Rhode Island Board of Education. Her appointment must be approved by the state Senate.

Her nomination comes a day after Chafee's initial pick to lead the board, George Caruolo, withdrew his name from consideration. Caruolo says the position's demands are too great and he must focus on supporting his family.

Lawmakers voted earlier this year to merge the Board of Regents and the Board of Governors for Higher Education into a single Board of Education.
