PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The mayor of Rhode Island's capital has gotten married in a surprise ceremony during a birthday party for his young daughter.
Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Farah Escamilla say they got married Saturday at a party held to celebrate the first birthday of their daughter, Farah Rose Taveras.
They say the ceremony was performed by a District Court judge who's the mayor's uncle. They say the ceremony was attended by about 100 relatives and friends, including Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
The couple got engaged this month and decided their daughter's birthday party would be the perfect place for celebrating their marriage.
The mayor's wife used to work as a legal assistant at a Providence-based law firm. She says she's chosen to be a stay-at-home mom now.
