An elm tree planted over a century ago on the grounds of the historic John Brown House in Providence has been afflicted with Dutch Elm disease and now must be removed.
The Rhode Island Historical Society says crews will remove the old elm to prevent the disease, a fungal infection, from spreading to other trees on the grounds.
Twelve other elms on the property will be treated in the spring in order to prevent them from suffering a similar fate.
