A Norwich, Connecticut police officer is serious condition after getting shot at an apartment complex standoff. Police say, the officer was shot several times after responding to a report yesterday afternoon that a man had threatened to provoke police into killing him.
A spokesman for Yale-New Haven hospital said Tuesday morning that Officer Jonathan Ley, who was shot several times, was upgraded to serious from critical.
Police evacuated the complex, while trying to negotiate with the man.
More than 12 hours later the building remained evacuated. When police were able to enter the building they found the gunman had taken his own life with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Residents have been allowed to return home except for the immediate neighbors who remain evacuated.
