Pawtucket Police arrested a man believed to be responsible for a series of car fires in the early hours of Sunday morning.

At 4:00 a.m. on Sunday police and fire crews responded to Slater St. for reports of a car fire. Upon arrival they found a vehicle with minor fire to the exterior trunk area with a heavy smell of gasoline. The fire was extinguished prior to the arrival of fire crews.

One hour later at 5:00 a.m. police responded to Bullock St. for a report of a second vehicle on fire. This vehicle was completely engulfed in flames and was quickly extinguished by fire crews.

A short time after police identified a vehicle that matched the description of the potential suspect. The police immediately smelled gasoline emanating from the vehicle and one of the occupants identified as Xavier Spooner, 18, had gasoline on his clothing. A gas container was also recovered from the vehicle.

Police took Spooner into custody and he was arraigned in Providence District Court on Arson charges.
