It's a new year and I got a new gig. For those of you who have followed me through my past endeavors thanks for logging on, and for those of you who are seeing this for the first time you are probably thinking, who the heck are you…
Either way, thanks for clicking.
2013 is already shaping up to be quite the year in Rhode Island and before getting down to the nuts and bolts of the news and politics I figured for my first post I'd share some insights from my new gig on the desk at ABC6.
SNOWMAGEDON: When did we as Rhode Islanders become such wimps? Is it just now that I have branched out into T.V. I am witnessing how much we overact because of an inch of snow or is this a new trend?
GAY MARRIAGE: This has been the top story for my first three weeks in T.V. I can't help but think this one is basically DOA in the Senate. It seems like advocates will have a better shot with a ballot question, plus in a "midterm" election it could really be quite the "Get Out the Vote" mechanism. Gay marriage on the ballot would most likely boost the turn out for progressive candidates.
PERSONNEL ISSUES: I can't let this one slide... Is it scary that Rhode Island needed to spend over a hundred thousand dollars to figure out that performance-based raises might be an incentive for employees to excel? And that perhaps having a human resources officer for state employees may be a good idea. We haven't paid so much for such brilliant intelligence since Providence's "Big Orange P." If you don't get the reference.. you are probably better off.
RIDING IN CARS WITH DOGS: Thank God for this most important piece of legislation. If it passes police have another reason they can pull you and Fido over. I can't figure out who qualifies has the crazier pet owner: the person who rides with Rover on their lap or the person who actually has specialized dog seatbelts in the vehicle. I'll admit, my frequent Siberian Husky co-pilot doesn't buckle up, but she is not exactly a lap dog either.
PRO-LIFERS are zealous advocates: Kudos to you. On the desk I receive many of phone calls, and pro-lifers have really tied up the lines to talk about their excitement over the "March for Life" in Washington, though it is national news, I give these folks a lot of credit for so zealously advocating for their cause. No matter what side of an issue you are on it is great to see so much passion when people feel strongly about something.
AMBULANCE CHASING DOES NOT ONLY PERTAIN TO LAWYERS… Okay so we don't quite chase the ambulances but we do try to track major fires, crimes, and accidents and that can get intense. I don't know what the "Ol' timers" did before Twitter.
I'M NOT A T.V. GUIDE: People think because you work at a T.V. station you know the complete programming schedule and why certain programs chose to air re-runs or make other decisions. I don't know the answers to these questions, I work in news. That is all.
AND I THOUGHT A RADIO SHOW was a lot of work… Then I saw T.V. Wow. I'm speechless and excited.
That's all, for now, I'll be posting regularly to keep you up-to-date on the latest political gossip and all the behind-the-scenes news.
Thanks for reading.
