BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Coach Jim Baron and his point guard son, Billy, have teamed up at Canisius to inject optimism into a struggling basketball program.
They've put their sudden departures at Rhode Island a year ago behind them. That's when Jim Baron was fired after 11 seasons as the Rams coach. And Billy hit what he called ``rock bottom,'' feeling partially responsible because he was the starting point guard on a team that went 7-24.
The two have bounced back at the mid-town Buffalo school.
Canisius (18-12) is enjoying its first winning season in 12 years, and after a 5-25 finish last year. With an 11-7 record in the tightly packed Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings, the Golden Griffins are the fourth seed entering the conference tournament at Springfield, Mass., this weekend.
