A Providence man was arrested in Newport after assaulting a sales clerk with Axe body spray and causing a scene inside a clothing store.

24-year-old David Powell of Providence wanted to purchase some clothing while in Newport. Powell attempted to purchase $233 of clothing at the Tennis Hall of Fame but was rejected when the stork clerk told him the check he was trying to use was no good.

Powell moved on and went to Laura Jean Denim there he attempted to once again purchase clothing. This time when the clerk refused to take his check , Powell became "extremely agitated," said Lt. William Fitzgerald of the Newport Police.

He sprayed Axe Kilo body spray in the face of a store clerk and knocked over a shelf before leaving the store. When he left the store he left behind one important item that would allow police to identify him; his ACI discharge card.

Powell took off, and employees called police. Police caught up with Powell at the Gateway Center waiting to board a RIPTA bus back to Providence.

Powell attempted to mislead police by providing them with a false name and birth date.

He was charged with simple assault, obstructing an officer, and check fraud.

This is not Powell's first run in with the law. He has faced several charges in the past including providing false information to 911, larceny, simple assault, willful trespass, and possession of marijuana.
