Man arrested for assaulting store clerk with Axe body spray
A Providence man was arrested
after assaulting a sales clerk with Axe body spray and causing a scene inside a
24-year-old David Powell of Providence
wanted to purchase some clothing while in Newport.
Powell attempted to purchase $233 of clothing at the Tennis Hall of Fame but
was rejected when the stork clerk told him the check he was trying to use was
Powell moved on and went to Laura Jean Denim there he
attempted to once again purchase clothing. This time when the clerk refused to
take his check , Powell became "extremely agitated," said Lt. William Fitzgerald of the Newport Police.
He sprayed Axe Kilo body spray in the face of a store clerk
and knocked over a shelf before leaving the store. When he left the store he
left behind one important item that would allow police to identify him; his ACI
Powell took off, and employees called police. Police caught
up with Powell at the Gateway Center waiting to board a RIPTA bus back to Providence.
Powell attempted to mislead police by providing them with a
false name and birth date.
He was charged with simple assault, obstructing an officer,
and check fraud.
This is not Powell's first run in with the law. He has faced
several charges in the past including providing false information to 911,
larceny, simple assault, willful trespass, and possession of marijuana.
