EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Over 30 volunteers came together Saturday to fix up the East Providence Recreation center, parts of which were in dire need of attention.
Over the course of several hours, volunteers sawed, hammered, and painted rooms within the building, which has suffered from lack of repairs after a tough economy necessitated cutbacks in funding.
"We heard that this place could use some work," said Jared Cowjur, one of the community leaders who arrived with volunteers in an effort to give the rec. center a facelift, after helping to raise $1,800 to spruce it up. "The rec. center is a great place that provides services to a lot of people in this community."
The recreation center has become even more important since sports in East Providence were shut down due to lack of funds, making the center a popular hangout for kids after school.
After a good day of elbow grease, the center is in much better shape now, than it was just a short time ago. "This makes me feel good because I'm basically benefiting myself and my friends who come here after school," said Nick Lopes, a volunteer.
Lopes, in his teens, comes to the center nearly every day with his friends. Now, he and others will share the benefits of a community coming together.
