A Middletown teacher pleaded not guilty to a domestic assault charge in Newport on Thursday for allegedly attacking a 17-year-old student.

39-year-old Patrick Aylward was charged with simple assault after an incident on Feb. 16 where it is said that he head butted the 17-year-old girl during an argument in the parking lot of the Founder's Brook Motel in Portsmouth.

Aylward, a physical education teacher at Middletown High school, had allegedly rented a room at the motel for himself and the girl prior to the incident. Middletown High School has been suspended the Aylward with pay. The school is currently looking into the details or Alyward's relationship with the student.

Lt. Nutt of the Middletown Police said a similar incident happened in Middletown last summer but no arrests were made. According to the report police responded to a domestic disturbance between Aylward and a 17-year-old girl at the Comfort Inn motel.

Aylward said that the girl had just broken up with her boyfriend and was angry with him for not consoling her. She began to get angry with him so Aylward left his truck causing her to scream at him to return to the vehicle.

The girl backed up Alyward's story and said the relationship was "strictly platonic." No arrest was made at the time.

Alyward was involved in another incident in Fall River on Feb. 4 when officers responded to a report of a break-in at his residence. No details from the incident have been released but Middletown Police say they were contacted by Fall River Police in connection with the incident.
