Cimex Exterminating, a Virginia pest control company specializing in bed bugs, has announced that its K-9 division has expanded and it will begin offering regular bed bug dog inspection services to industries such as cruise lines, movie theaters, transportation services, and healthcare facilities in addition to its current hospitality and apartment buildings clients.

The reappearance of bed bugs on the American cultural radar has made travelers more cautious when staying in hotels and renters more selective when looking for apartments, but hospitality and real estate are not the only industries that must take measures to control these hitchhiking blood-suckers.

"Anyplace where a variety of people or their belongings spend time is someplace you can pick up bed bugs," explained Cimex Exterminating president Kevin Campbell. "You can get them sitting in a cab, or on your luggage in the trunk of the cab, in a movie theater, on a train or cruise ship, or even from a healthcare clinic or daycare center."

A report of a bed bug infestation can be financially devastating to any business, and cause damage to its reputation that can take months or years to repair. If businesses take the same proactive approach they use in other areas of preventive maintenance, they can minimize that risk.

Campbell said that the focus of bed bug dog inspections in recent years has been on hotels and apartment communities, but more and more infestations are being reported in other industries. There was an unmet need in these other industries.

"Here in Portsmouth," he said, "we've seen three public schools and 39 school busses treated for bed bugs in just the past couple months, and bed bugs are being reported in secondhand stores, movie theaters, daycares, and even taxis. These are businesses that simply can't afford to lose business because of bed bugs."

Cimex Exterminating, which employs a division of 10 certified bed bug dogs trained at the National K-9 Pest Detection Academy, is now in a position to offer affordable regular bed bug dog inspections to these businesses.

As with other forms of preventive maintenance, the idea is simple: proactively invest a small amount in doing something regularly, before there is a problem, to reduce the risk of incurring catastrophic costs later. Regular bed bug dog inspections not only provide peace of mind for business owners and their customers, they also allow the business to catch potential problems early, while both the problem and its effect on the business reputation are both still manageable.

Bed bug dog inspections are quick, unobtrusive, and more affordable than many business owners think, especially when viewed against the potential costs of the business being labeled by the public as having a bed bug problem.

“We are giving these other sorts of businesses – those outside of the lodging and property management industries – affordable access to a bed bug early warning system that they didn’t have before,” Campbell said. “We’re excited that our K-9 division is large enough that we have the resources to serve these markets.”

In Virginia, any business with a variety of customers using its facilities is encouraged to contact Cimex Exterminating to discuss the potential benefit of regularly-scheduled bed bug sniffing dog inspections.
