According to [The New York Times, global temperatures are warmer than they were 4,000 years ago, a state of affairs most likely caused by human activity. Though there was once a similar planetary warm period, researchers at Oregon State University say this time it’s “unique over a longer period” and that temperatures will continue to rise in this century. This modern temperature increase could actually kill off many species because of its rapid acceleration, The New York Times reports.
Dr. Michael E. Mann, a researcher at Pennsylvania State University, says the increase of temperature could leave human civilization with fewer resources. In the article he says, “We and other living things can adapt to slower changes. It’s the unprecedented speed with which we’re changing the climate that is so worrisome.”
Justin Maas, spokesperson for Yumi Media, says that our precarious situation with the planet's climate has a lot to do with what we eat and how we cook it. Maas notes that cooking meat produces a lot of greenhouse gases that contribute directly to the rising temperatures. “If we continue down this path, we might run out of food and actually sabotage ourselves by ruining the Earth,” he says. “It’s been said recently that in order to keep up with food demands, we would have to switch to a mainly plant-based diet.”
Instead of eating meat, Maas suggests people should switch to meat-alternative products. “Quorn products are delicious, matching the taste of meat but offering superior nutrition,” he says. “They have the same consistency as your favorite meat products, but are sustainably-grown and made from plants.”
Maas adds that Quorn complaints are overshadowed by the recent horsemeat controversy and more people are leaning towards a meat-reducing lifestyle. “Eliminating or even reducing meat consumption is not only better for the environment, it’s also better for your health.”
