The drama in the Rhode Island Republican Party is not over.

Dan Harrop, who lost by one vote to Mark Smiley in the party chairman's race will challenge the decision.

Harrop will make an internal challenge of the decision based on the Rhode Island GOP's by-laws.

On Sunday Smiley was announced the winner after the party launched an investigation into a delegate discrepancy that occurred during the March 21 vote. After the vote Smiley had earned 94 delegate votes and Harrop had received 93 votes, totaling 187 delegate votes however, only 186 delegates were checked into vote.

Chairman Mark Zaccaria said that during the investigation it was determined that there were in fact 187 eligible delegates in attendance and voting. Zaccaria said a volunteer checking in delegates at the door simply got distracted and forgot to put a check mark next to one delegates' name. The delegate in question arrived with his wife to the event. His wife was checked in however he was not. The delegate, his wife, and the volunteer at the door gave sworn affidavits that the delegate was present and certified to vote.

The party is expected to reconvene the continued March 21st meeting on April 2. It was during this meeting Smiley was expected to officially take his place as party chair.
