RISPCA buys pig from Bonniedale, Owner reports pig stolen
The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
purchased a pot-bellied pig named Delilah from the owner of Bonniedale farm after
receiving several complaints about the animal's health but the farm's owner is
saying the pig was stolen.
The RISPCA says it had an agent pay $1,000 for the pig which
has been moved to the pot-bellied pig rescue in North Kingstown
until it can find a good home. However that's the owner of Bonniedale Farm Dan McKenzie
says that's not the case.
After the RISPCA moved the pig from the property McKenzie reported
the pig stolen with the Scituate Police. Finnochio said McKenzie refused to give
the woman who made the pig transaction a receipt.
McKenzie said he is offering a reward for the pigs return: two
bags of dog food and twenty dollars.
"We feel as if we've done the right thing because we believe
we would have failed in charging him with failure to provide adequate shelter
for the pig. So the best way we felt was to try and buy the pig off of Mr.
Mckenzie.," said Dr. E.J. Finnochio of the RISPCA.
McKenzie was recently charged with animal cruelty after a horse
was found on his farm severely underweight. The horse was removed from the animal
rescue farm and it's condition has improved.
