A man is hospitalized for evaluation, after barricading himself inside his home in Wareham with his young child inside. The standoff on Vladd Avenue last night lasted more than three hours.

33–year–old Michael Mendes told officers he had a gun and he planned on hurting himself, all while his 19–month–old child was inside. Police shut down part of Route 6 and told neighbors to stay indoors. Their first priority was getting the child out safely.

"Mendes eventually gave in, putting the child on the doorstep so that the officer could take care of the child," said Lt. Kevin Walsh of the Wareham Police Department.

Mendes stayed inside for more than 2 hours after that, threatening officers with weapons. Neighbors say one of the officers tried to coax Mendes out of the home using a megaphone. Eventually, tear gas was used to get Mendes out. He was taken to Tobey Hospital, criminal charges are being considered.
