The dramatic facelift for Providence's Kennedy Plaza will be unveiled tonight at the Biltmore Hotel.

The plan, designed by Union Studio Architecture and Community Design, involves establishing new town squares and rerouting buses to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

The square is inspired by Florence, Italy and New York's Bryant Park. The new names for the sections of the new square are expected to be announced Thursday night.

"We have been designing it since July of 2012," said Joe Haskett Senior Associate of Union Studio Architecture and Community Design, "now we just have to realize it."

The redesign of Kennedy Plaza is part of Providence's Mayor Angel Taveras chief economic development priorities.

Governor Lincoln Chafee and Congressman David Cicilline will join Taveras and the project's designers at this evening's event that begins at the Providence Biltmore Hotel at 5:30 p.m.
