More than 20 officers stood guard inside a superior court room, where 32-year-old Jovani Torres pleaded guilty to the murder of Ivan Taveras. Officers ordered the families to sit on opposite sides of the courtroom as Torres admitted to shooting and killing Taveras outside Garcia Auto Accessories in June of 2012.
Surveillance cameras caught the two fighting, moments before Torres pulled a gun and shot Taveras, killing him. Taveras' son saw it happen.
Taveras' sister Anna spoke in court, "I hope Jovani thinks of what he's done to my family
everday for the rest of his natural life. I hope he feels the same pain and
sorrow and hurt that we must endure everyday for the rest of our life because
Ivan is no longer present."
Torres was given a life sentence for Taveras' murder. He'll serve 40 years before being eligible for parole.
