CRANSTON, R.I. - Residents of a multi-family home in Cranston are safe after a fire ravaged their home on Oaklawn Avenue.
Fire officials say they responded to 333 Oaklawn Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning and found the porch completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters say they believe someone who lived in the house became aware that the building was on fire and may have saved lives by knocking on other residents' doors in a bid to evacuate the building.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to knock down the flames, but at least five people are displaced from their homes.
Fire officials say there is substantial damage to the home, but they believe the fire was accidentally started and is not being investigated as suspicious at this time.
