WARWICK, R.I. - George Scmeider touched many people's lives throughout his life, and dozens gathered Saturday at a park with his namesake to honor the late coach's legacy by beginning construction of a new basketball court.

Materials and labor for the construction of the court were donated by various businesses and individuals, including the Cardi Corporation and Gary J. Perry Paving Company.

As bulldozers tore up the remains of the old basketball court Saturday morning, residents looked on at the patch of ground that will become a part of the neighborhood that residents can be proud of, in the name of a teacher and family of four who was a pillar of Warwick's Oakland Beach Neighborhood.

According to the park project's website, one of Schmeider's wishes was for the park to be fixed up. Residents who were at the park Saturday said the court was not in very good condition, and that Schmeider wanted for the community to have a nice place for the children to play.

Renovations to the park are expected to be completed by mid-June.
