SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - More than 3,250 students at the University of Rhode Island are set to get their undergraduate degrees.
URI's 127th commencement exercises are taking place Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center arena on campus. The university moved the ceremony indoors this year for security reasons. Despite student complaints, officials cited heightened concern after the Boston Marathon bombings and a gun scare on campus last month.
The main commencement speaker is Giovanni Feroce, chief executive officer of the Rhode Island jewelry maker Alex and Ani. He will also receive an honorary degree along with several others.
Undergraduate students receive their degrees in separate ceremonies of their individual colleges.
Nearly 800 graduate degrees were scheduled to be handed out on Saturday.
