It's now been 35 days since the Boston marathon bombings, and for the first time one of the heroes who responded is speaking out.

Rhode Island State Trooper Roupen Bastajian said, "Reality kicked in and everyone was obviously injured. It was mass devastation. It took a couple of seconds to take it all in."

Rhode Island state trooper, Roupen Bastajian, had just finished running in the Boston marathon...when he heard two bombs go off.

While many people ran away from the scene in a panic...he ran back toward the injured.

Bastajian said, "There was one gentleman on the ground. He had both legs severed and I just ...there was another gentleman next to me, and we grabbed some gauze and started applying tourniquets. "

In the chaos Bastajian believes he treated 5 or 6 people, but does not know any of their names.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "Before he became a State Policeman, Trooper Bastajian was a U.S. Marine. And he says the training of both organizations proved critical the day of the bombings."

For his heroism, Trooper Bastajian was awarded the highest honor bestowed by Rhode Island state police.

Some day he hopes to meet the man who lost his two legs, but whose life the trooper saved.

"Oh I would love to. Again I just want to give him his time and space. And I pray for him and I pray for those that are there, that you know they can make it through this difficult time, because it is," said Bastajian.

After helping treat bombing victims, Bastajian finally called his wife and kids back in Rhode Island to assure them he was okay.
