Search for survivors continues in Oklahoma City

Rescue efforts are in full force Tuesday morning as the sun rises on the destruction left behind after a massive tornado tore through Oklahoma City. The mile wide twister leveled schools and homes. More than 51 are confirmed dead, dozens more are expected to be found. Among the dead, at least 20 children.

As of Monday night hospitals have been treating more than 120 patients after the tornado ripped through Oklahoma City, including 70 Children. State medical examiners office: 51 killed were killed and authorities are expecting for the death toll to rise as emergency crews have been moving into the hardest- hit areas.

A mix of volunteers and first responders are combing through debris in an Oklahoma City suburb looking for survivors.

The city of Moore, Oklahoma was hit by a mile-wide tornado on Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service said the tornado's preliminary classification was an EF-4, with winds up to 200 mph.

People wearing neon-green vests were joined by residents in the search through rubble. Neighborhoods are flattened and homes blown apart.

Several children have been pulled out of the rubble alive at a school in an Oklahoma City suburb.

Towers Elementary School in Moore, Oklahoma., on Monday after a massive tornado hit the region. 

Rescue workers lifted children from the rubble before they were passed down a human chain and taken to a triage center set up in the school's parking lot.

The school is southwest of Oklahoma City. Its roof appears mangled and the walls had fallen in or had collapsed.

Shards of wood and pieces of insulation were strewn everywhere.

KOCO meteorologist Damon Lane: "I just got a text from my wife... the neighborhood looks like a war zone; it looks like an absolute war zone."
