The Rhode Island Senate approved a bill that would hike minimum wage in Rhode Island to $8.00 an hour.

The legislation, proposed by Senator Erin Lynch, boosts Rhode Island's minimum wage by twenty-five cents.

The minimum wage was recently increased to the current rate of $7.75 an hour in January prior to that the state had not seen an increase since 2007.

The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for approval where it has been introduce by Rep. David Bennett. If passed by the House Rhode Island would have the third highest minimum wage in the New England.

The federal minimum wage is set at $7.25.
