The Town of Portsmouth has filed for a restraining order to halt the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike authority from installing a toll system on the Sakonnet River Bridge.

The tolls system began getting installed on Wednesday however they are not expected to go into operation until July.

The system will be all electronic and will read E-Z Pass transponders or read license plates and then bill the vehicle owners.

Rhode Islanders with E-Z Pass will pay seventy-five cents per trip while non-residents will pay $3.75 per crossing. People without transponders will pay $5.25.

The town of Portsmouth has presented a legal challenge to the proposed tolls.
