Fall River is getting 78-thousand dollars from the feds to help fight crime. The city gets hit with about 300 robberies every year, most targeting businesses. Police plan to use that money to put extra eyes on high crime areas.

The clerks at Ruby Convenience store in Fall River won't soon forget the run–in they had with two masked men last month. The workers told ABC 6 then, instincts took over when they scared the robbers off with a hammer and a chair.

Dozens of businesses like The Ruby Convenience Store are held up every year in Fall River. Which is why for the second year in a row, the Fall River Police Department has applied for grants to step up patrols in crime–riddled business areas. They've been granted the money both years.

Chief Daniel Racine explains how they pinpoint the high-crime business areas.

"Where are the robberies happening, where are crimes happening, and once we have that data we can deploy our resources to those areas to ensure those areas are getting the proper resources to diminish any particular criminal activity that's going on there,"said Racine.

The effort brings relief to clerk Muhammed Rahman, it was his brother who threw the chair at robbers last month. Those robbers are still on the run.

"Too much crazy, too much crazy," said Rahman.

The increased patrols also give lifelong resident, Denise Furtado, a sense of security.

"Won't be afraid to go places If you know that they're watching you," said Furtado.

Chief Daniel Racine hopes the effort will also attract new business.

"We want businesses to come here and flourish here, so it's important for us to ensure that there is safety for businesses so people feel comfortable going to and from the business," said Racine.

The money will also go towards surveillance cameras and safety training for business owners.
