A New Bedford man has been arrested after leading police on a foot pursuit through the city.

29 - year - old Antwan Marquis Wells is charged with disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, and assault and battery on a police officer.

Yesterday afternoon around 3:30p.m. officers were sent to Cottage and Willis St. in New Bedford regarding a male on a porch brandishing a firearm. While officers were investigating the area, they entered the house at 434 Cottage St.

Wells was in the apartment and he fit the description of the suspect. When officers questioned him he became evasive and gave them several different names. During this time, the suspect began to fight with police and then quickly fled the apartment, leading to a foot chase through several neighborhoods. The suspect made it out onto the roof of a garage at 342 Cottage St.

After jumping off the roof, he was immediately taken into custody. No firearm was recovered, but a black handled knife was found.

Wells led a similar foot chase with the police through the downtown area on January 18th of this year. He was running on Route 18 attempting to get into vehicles stopped at the lights on Elm St. and even managed to jump into the bed of a pickup truck while trying to flee the officers. He was wanted for the theft of laptops from Bristol Community College.

Wells is currently located at Rhode Island Hospital being treated for injuries caused by the jump.
