The giant ham radio tower is not getting a good reception in an East Greenwich neighborhood.

Oh the radio reception is just fine; but not the reception of neighbors.

"Well it's unsightly. It sort of looks like National Gird over here," said Joan Ray.

"Kind of like a space center or something," said Carol Chisholm.

"It's just not appropriate for the type of neighborhood this is," Ray added.

"Well I think it's pretty ugly," summed up Chisholm.

The 67 foot radio tower belongs to ham radio enthusiast, James Setzler, who says he told neighbors he was replacing a smaller antennae.

James Setzler, the ham radio operator said, "Well that's the reason I tried to anticipate that and tried to inform them what I was going to be doing. And I did this starting back in February and I haven't heard a single comment from anyone until just the past couple of days."

But it's not just the tower.

The guy wires and anchoring posts stretch to the edges of the property.

At least one will be moved.

ABC6 Chief Political reporter mark Curtis said, "While critics say this tower is ugly, the bigger issue may be whether it is legal. And for now, the Town of East Greenwich is saying yes."

The town limits structures to 70 feet, but this radio tower comes in just shy, at 67 feet.

"Oh it's perfectly legal," said Setzler.

Legal yes; but neighbors are concerned it will hurt their property values.

Joan Ray, a neighbor, said, "Well we're worried. We're very worried about that. And there's no way to tell, what that's going to be."

Many neighbors have lived here over 30 years, and are hoping they can find a compromise.
