Soon Newporters will be able to take a "trip to Block Island," more readily than they have in the past. A new hi-speed ferry service will begin operation on Friday from Perrotti Park in Newport. The hi-speed aluminum catamaran ferry will travel between Newport and Block Island, with the travel time expected to be only an hour and ten minutes.

"Interstate Navigation has run a seasonal traditional ferry service for many years out of Newport, said Megan Moran, the Sales Manager for The Block Island Ferry. "The ferry ran out of Fort Adams and only one trip a day. The sailing time was 2 hours one way. The new hi-speed service is departing from downtown Newport-Perrotti Park. The new service will offer multiple crossings a day to travelers."

According to the Block Island Ferry website riders from Block Island will be able to for the first time depart in the morning, spend a full day in Newport, and then return to Block Island later in the evening. Newport Riders will have the same opportunity to spend a full day on Block Island as well.

The ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for the new service will be Friday, June 28th from 11am-1pm aboard the M/V Islander. The service is expected to run starting June 29th until September 2nd.
