Minimum wage increases to $8

The General Assembly approved legislation that will increase minimum wage from $7.75 to $8 starting January 1st.

Rhode Island's new minimum wage will make it the third highest in New England. Tied with Massachusetts, Rhode Island is only behind Vermont, $8.60, and Connecticut, 8.25.

Senator Lynch, a sponsor of the bill, said "Minimum wage workers are vital to keep our economy running and many businesses functioning. Not only will the increase to $8 help those at the bottom of the pay scale make a little more as they struggle to make ends meet, the timing of the increase- at the beginning of the year- will ensure that businesses have ample time between now and then to prepare to implement the new rate."

The increase makes up for Rhode Island having the longest gap between increases out of all of the New England states. The last raise prior to 2013 was in 2007.

The bill has passed the House and is on its way to the Senate.
