CHARLESTOWN - To help protect a nesting shorebird, Rhode Island environmental officials are closing an off-road vehicle trail through the East Beach-Ninigret Conservation Area temporarily.
According to officials, the piping plovers had their beach habitat changed after Superstorm Sandy. The shorebirds' chicks are feeding and taking refuge along the trail.
Robert Paquette, chief of RI state parks, says the two-mile trail is closed except to pedestrian traffic as of Monday afternoon. He adds that the decision was made in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The trail will reopen on or before August 1.
East Beach remains open and can be accessed from the main parking lot.
