Governor Lincoln Chafee has vetoed legislation to authorize a "Choose Life" license plate in Rhode Island.
The plate would have raised money for a Christian crisis pregnancy center that opposes abortion. Governor Chafee announced his decision today, saying it is inappropriate to use state license plates to raise money for a religious organization.
Had the legislation been approved, half of the $40 cost of the plate would have gone to CareNet, a faith-based crisis pregnancy center in Providence. Supporters of the legislation said the proceeds could have helped reduce the number of abortions.
A three-fifths vote by the General Assembly would override Governor Chafee's veto. However, with House Speaker Gordon Fox himself opposed to the bill, it is unlikely another vote will even occur.
