Posted: Updated:

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI (AP) - Two University of Rhode Island students are studying forest ecology as part of a Harvard University initiative that pairs students with faculty mentors for environmental research.

Arline Gould of Providence and Justin Vendettuoli of North Kingstown are among 26 students selected from around the U.S. to take part in the Harvard Forest Summer Research Program. More than 600 students applied.

Gould is studying the growth and decay of tree roots by taking photographs down narrow pipes placed in the soil.  Vendettuoli is looking at the effects of an invasive insect on hemlock trees. The research is being done at the Harvard Forest in Petersham, Mass.  Both students are majoring in wildlife and conservation biology at URI.
