Friends and family of a teen who drowned off Conimicut Point gathered tonight to celebrate his life.

Javon Jimenez drowned after he was swept off a sandbar last week.

Today would have been his 17th birthday.

"It is hard, but i feel like he is here, so that's how i feel, I feel he is here and it is hard, but I'm not going to...my son will never die to me, he'll always be here, every year I'll celebrate his birthday," said Brandy Jimenez, Javon's mother.

Brandy Jimenez has started a petition to try and make Conimicut Point safer.

She'd like the state to close access to or destroy the sandbar that her son was walking on before he was swept into the water by strong currents and drowned.
