A Kentucky teen vacationing in Westerly and an off-duty lifeguard have become a hero around town. On Friday the Westerly Town Council awarded two commendations for a heroic rescue in Misquamicut Beach.

"I saw two guys screaming and yelling for help so I paddled out to them," says Austin Trefes, 13, of Louisville, KY. "They were caught in the rip tide."

Trefes has been vacationing on Misquamicut Beach his whole life and was surfing early in the evening of July 28th when the rescue happened. Two men were drifting off in the fast-moving tide.

Trefes paddled over and told the men to grab on, but one man fell off. That's when off-duty lifeguard Greg Allen, 21, jumped in to help and carried the second man to safety.

On Monday, the Westerly Town Council presented both rescuers awards for their heroism.

"I really just did what I know how to do," said Trefes.
