A Warwick police officer was taken to the hospital on Saturday after he was attacked by a pit bull during a call.

Around ten o'clock Officer Dan O'Connell was called to a home on Pequot Avenue in Warwick for a report of a domestic disturbance. Officer O'Connell was in the process of restraining the homeowner, Sean Sanita, in the front yard, when Sanita's pit bull escaped from the home and went on the attack.

"The dog immediately ran over to his owner who was on the ground and then jumped up on the cop twice," said a neighbor who declined to give her name. "The cop immediately pulled out his gun and started shooting."

Officer O'Connell suffered bites to his hip and ankle area and was taken to the hospital for treatment, but released later Saturday.

Sanita was arrested for obstruction and disorderly conduct.

The pit bull suffered minor gunshot wounds and was taken to the Warwick Animal Hospital for treatment. Police say the dog will be held at a local shelter pending a vicious animal hearing.
