HOPE VALLEY, RI- It's a somber day for the Burnette family. They were expecting a happy Labor Day weekend, but lightening struck their back yard barn, killing their two horses trapped inside.

"I thought I'd be on time to you know, rescue the animals and it was really pouring and really thundering and lightening," said owner Vicki Burnette.

Around 4:30 Sunday morning, Burnette was awake. It was pouring rain and all she could hear was the storm.

"Was standing in the bathroom and I heard like a pop and so right away I looked out to see if I could see anything and I thought I had seen an orange glow," said Burnette.

Today, inside the charred barn, you could still see a cloud of smoke coming from that hay. Fire officials said smoke inhalation was what ultimately killed those two horses.

With such a large amount of hay, there was little fire officials could do to salvage the barn and save the horses.

The family buried them in a field just beyond the barn.

Burnette adds, "It's not a very good day; can never bring the horsed back and they were nice horses too."
