A suspected gang member accused of opening fire on police early Thursday morning appeared in court on Monday.
18-year-old Aaron Cabreja was arraigned on charges of assault and conspiracy after he and another individual identified as 20-year-old James Lawrence, allegedly opened fire on a crowd of rival gang members while under cover officers were talking to them. The officers were uninjured but the shots fired led to a police chase throughout the city.
Cabreja was ordered held 90-days in the ACI for violating a District Court probation which he had received after leaving the scene of an accident.
Police say Cabreja is a member of the Hartford Soldier Gang and his intended targets were members of the Harriet Street Gang. A 17-year-old member of the Harriet Street Gang was shot in both legs but is expected to recover.
Cabreja will appear in court again on October 7.
Last Thursday Vicente Rodriguez, the alleged driver in the incident was arraigned and held on $75,000 bail with surety.
