Historic Jenks Park in Central Falls is really in need of a fix up.
Problem is, the city is short on cash.
So here comes the latest Internet phenomenon, known as "crowd funding" and the company "Citizinvestor."
"How would you feel if we turned that pit, into a beautiful community park? I'm all for a park. A park huh? Sounds like a really good idea," said a promotional video for Citizinvestor.
So Central Falls will seek 10 thousand dollars in online donations for Jenks Park.
"Myself, as well as many others, and the Mayor are really looking to new and creative ways to raise money and to push projects forward to make the city a much better place," said Joshua Giraldo, Director of Parks for Central Falls.
Crowd funding is best known from the website, "Kickstarter," where fans raise money for rock bands or movies.
ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "This project in Central Falls marks the first time that crowd funding has been used for a government project in Rhode Island."
These ugly blue trash cans will be replaced by recycling bins made of public art - similar to those donY " in Providence.
"The artists get a chance to express themselves; get a chance to express the community; and help the neighbors and the neighborhood in the City of Central Falls," said Howie Sneider of "The Steel Yard."
So will neighbors donate?
"The parents, neighbors need to come together to save the parks for the children. If it comes to, and I've got to squeeze a couple bucks here and there, I would do it," said Central Falls parent Halima Dayugar.
