Big mayoral primary race Tuesday in Woonsocket

Woonsocket is in deep financial trouble.

Rhode Island's sixth largest city could go into receivership, like Central Falls did.

Four–term State Representative Lisa Baldeli–Hunt wants to be the new Mayor.

"Well the state appointed Budget Commission you know, is in place, because we have not been run properly in this municipality. And there is a fiscal crisis and it's been under the Mayor's leadership for the past 20 years," said candidate Lisa Baldeli-Hunt

Incumbent Leo Fontaine, says he has a new plan to get Woonsocket out of red ink, and so now is not the time to change mayors.

"Obviously there's still some challenges and road blocks ahead, that we need to overcome, but that's where I think that we need to have somebody that has the vision, the integrity and the honesty to be able to talk to the people of the city and tell them where we're at and move things forward," said Mayor Fontaine.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "The Mayor's race in Woonsocket is somewhat unusual this time, because for one time only, the winner will serve a three-year term."

The city wants to sync up its elections, to the statewide ballot.

This Mayor's race also features perennial Woonsocket candidate Michael Moniz, and a political newcomer David Fisher.

"And clearly you can look around Woonsocket and see that, that is not working. The way we've always done it has led us to this point and we really need to shift our approach and our direction," said candidate Fisher.

The city is struggling with lots of real estate vacancies; and a new fight on whether volunteers should replace some full–time firefighters.

Polls are open Tuesday October 8th from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

ABC6 News will have the results Tuesday night at 11 p.m.
