UPDATE: The 56-year-old Portsmouth woman who barricaded herself inside her apartment has died from what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Portsmouth police along with Rhode Island State Police were on scene at the Union Street residence around 1:15 Friday, after receiving a call from her relative who reported she was being despondent.

Upon arrival officers found her alone in her bathroom with a gun pointed to her head and two other firearms next to her.

After failed attempts to negotiate with her police left the home and started negotiations over the phone. Throughout Friday afternoon and evening they tried to have her exit her home. The entire area was contained and isolated, and other homes were evacuated. Union St. was closed to traffic between Jepson Lane and Botanica.

At 3:15 Saturday afternoon, after calls from negotiators went unanswered, the State Police tactical unit entered the home and found the woman had died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials confirmed that no one else was inside the home.
