The streets of Norton are quiet today, but a few weeks from now they will be filled with the sights and sounds of a Veterans Day parade. But one high note will be missing from the annual tradition. The high school marching band is unable to perform this year.

"Mostly anger, but disappointment more than anything else because you just assume that it's going to happen," said Edward Brault of the towns Veterans Council. He got the news Thursday.

The school has a pep–band, not a traditional marching band, and they are in the middle of re–structuring.

"It's not that we don't want to participate. It's that we're not ready to participate because of the unfortunate decisions that people had to make in the last few years because of budgets," said Joseph Baeta, Superintendent of Norton Public Schools.

"You've got to have the music in order to march, and you can't do it with out. It would just be like going out for a walk," said Brault.

The council is now hoping that a band from a nearby high school, or college like Wheaton, will be able to step in and help, but there is a time crunch.

"We've got about 3 weeks and there are an awful lot of bands and there are only so many parades. Unfortunately most of the surrounding towns have the parade at the same time," said Brault.

In the meantime Norton schools will continue fine tuning their band program, and are looking forward to marching in future parades.

"It's going to take time. The process requires a feeding system. It's a triple A to the majors. We need to get band back into 4th and 5th grades. And that's what we're doing now," said Baeta.

The council says no matter what happens, the parade in Norton won't skip a beat. The show will go on.
