LINCOLN - People living in Lincoln are upset their cars were splattered with paint.

Earlier this month, a RIDOT subcontractor painted new fog lines on Smithfield Avenue, and some vehicles, parked legally on the street, were hit with the splattered paint.

Now the drivers are fed–up that nothing's been done to fix their cars.

"Someone needs to take responsibility...you know, I'm sure if I did something to one of their vehicles they'd expect me to take care of it," said Steve Roach, whose car was damaged by paint. "It's on my rims, my tires, the side of my car," he said.

Roach's is just one of 19 cars damaged when Roadsafe Traffic Systems Inc., a subcontractor for RIDOT, painted new fog lines on Smithfield Ave on October 9th.

A police report was filed and the DOT says it's addressed the issue with the company.

"We've had this conversation with the contractor... put yourself in their position... what if this was your car, what if this was your wife's car or your neighbors car... it's inexcusable for you it's inexcusable for them," said Mike Lewis, Director of RIDOT.

Lewis said that RIDOT is reaching out to the vehicle owners mentioned in the report to facilitate the claims process with the subcontractor, and get the damage fixed... but Roach says, that's just not happening.

"I left a message and now the person's mailbox is full, so I keep calling as I'm told to do... but I haven't heard a response yet," said Roach. He noted that perhaps the most frustrating part of this situation is that he was never told that the painting was going to happen in the first place. He says, if he knew, he would have gladly moved his car.

According to, RIDOT, this isn't a normal occurrence.

They don't know what caused the paint to fly... but they say it could have been anything from strong winds, to driver inexperience.

If you or anyone you know has experienced this problem, RIDOT says to call their customer service line.
