Race for Rhode Island Governor is taking shape

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras spent the day talking about education reforms, and not this coming Monday's announcement that he will run for Governor.

ABC6 Reporter Mark Curtis asked, "And you'll be talking about Monday, on Monday? What can we expect?"

"I'll be talking about Monday on Monday and look forward to hopefully seeing you there," said Mayor Taveras.

Taveras will be Rhode Island's first viable Latino for governor.

RIC professor Kay Israel says that could be an advantage.

"His ability to bring in groups that don't normally vote as high as they usually do. In other words he's able to get out the vote and that makes a big difference," said political analyst, Professor Israel of Rhode Island College.

General Treasurer Gina Raimondo says she'll decide on a bid for governor by the end of this year.

"She's perceived as competent. She's moderate and that may help in this state," said Professor Israel.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "A wildcard in the race could be Ken Block who got 6 percent of the vote last time as a Moderate Party candidate. This time he might run as a Republican."

One Republican likely running is Cranston mayor Allan Fung.

He's scheduled a major announcement for November 4th.

"Remember, no one has officially, really announced yet from the major parties, so it will be an exciting time and this is going to be the start of probably a long year," said Mayor Allan Fung (R) Cranston, an all but certain Republican candidate for Governor.

And with no presidential race on the ballot next year, urnout by Democrats may be down:

Dr. Kay Israel said, "The thing he's (Fung) got going is that Republicans tend to do better, in off election years."

Democrat Clay Pell, grandson of Senator Pell, may also run for governor.
