WEST WARWICK - When Reverend Kenneth Ordway entered the Harvest Fellowship Church early Sunday morning to prepare for services, he got the shock of a
lifetime: graffiti and swastikas painting the walls, floors, and seats. "When I entered the building it looked like a
horror show," Ordway said.
Among the phrases on the wall were "White Hispanic Posse," " lucky this is all you got," and "Muslim false prophet."
The church and the community are both stumped as to who the culprit may be.
"We've never had any problems with the people at this
point, and we're just amazed that this is taking place in our community," said Ordway
"Everybody knows everybody so, you know, I didn't
expect it," said Susan Swindelles, who lives near the church.
The culprit isn't the only mystery...
Perhaps the strangest part of all of this, is that the parts
of the church typically considered most holy: the pulpit, communion table,
and crosses on the walls, were left completely alone.
Though that provides little solace for the church.
"We hear this on the news, on television, you read about it,
but never think it's going to happen to us one day. And... it's here," said Ordway.
Police are investigating. They believe whoever is responsible broke in to the church through an air duct either Friday or Saturday night. Police are inclined to think the vandals are teens, since the air ducts are made up of small, narrow passage ways.
The church's insurance company is expected to come to the church sometime today to inspect the damages.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the West Warwick Police Department.
