15-year-old finishes second in Newport Pell Bridge Run

Runners made their way through Newport this morning for the Newport Pell Bridge Run/Walk.

Sunday morning at 6:30 the starting gun sent off 3,559 runners and walkers, starting from the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority headquarters, over the Newport Pell Bridge, and finishing on America's Cup Avenue.

Geoff Nelson of Bristol finished first overall, followed by 15-year-old Matthew Wilks from Warwick. Sandy Spitler of Newport placed third overall and was the first female finisher.

Senator Jack Reed, Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed, and RI Representative Peter Martin also took part.

Of the 3,559 people who entered the race, 3,024 crossed the finish line of the 4.2-mile course.
