The first snow flakes of the season fell in Rhode Island Tuesday morning. The light dusting covered cars and even some front lawns.

"Jack Frost is definitely here," said Barbara Johns of Providence.

"Well, it's pretty, but I'm not quite ready mentally for it," said Joy Vermula who was driving in Cumberland.

The flurries mixed in with the rain and made for a messy ride on roadways from Cumberland, to Woonsocket, to I-95 in Providence. The pavement temperatures, however, are still too warm for snow to stick. That is good news to all those tough New England drivers who hardly batted an eye–lash at the fluffy flakes.

"I haven't had any problems. Nothing yet, but it's early so it will probably get a little slippery," said Bill Harfst of North Smithfield.

The bigger story of the day, after the snow subsided, may be the cold. Temperatures took a nose dive. One bank thermometer in Woonsocket read 32 degrees just before 10 am.

"I don't have my hat and gloves and stuff. I was thinking is this early? Is it climate change?," asked Vemula.

Others are taking the first snow in stride, saying this is just the beginning.

Winter is still about 6 weeks away.

"I think the bigger stuff is coming. It's definitely coming," said Johns.
