Local organizations begin fundraising efforts for Philippines

Recovery efforts continue in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Hiyan. Nearly 10,000 people are feared dead after the largest storm in recorded history.

Now some local groups are spearheading relief efforts, making plans to bring aid to the more than 9.8 million people affected by the devastating storm. Efforts may be in their early stages, but soon necessary... and in some cases life–saving supplies will be making their way overseas.

"We're planning a bunch of fundraising events and we'll be announcing our concrete plans on Saturday at our cultural show," said Amber Teng of the Filipino Alliance, a student group at Brown University.

"We're meeting with the Filipino Association of Newport County today and we're going to try to nail down what exactly can be used there, because the biggest thing with a drive is to make sure that we collect what's needed.... And that's what we send there," said Peter Cardi of Cardi's Furniture.

Supplies may range anywhere from clothing and food, to water and pharmaceuticals. Once decisions are made, Cardi's Furniture will host a collection drive either this weekend or next.

But gathering donations is the easy part.

"The concern is getting the supplies logistically to where they're needed. And we have an area devastated as badly as the Philippines, where do you bring the stuff?" asked Cardi.

When that question is answered Cardi's will open their shipping freights to any other local groups hosting collections, so that everything can go over all at once.

"I think it's kind of like a wake up call... that the only way we can kind of solve problems like these or get past calamities like these is through a united effort," said Teng.

Cardi's hopes to have all the details ironed out by tomorrow.

The Filipino Alliance will provide more information at their cultural show, Legends of the Sea, on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. They will also be taking monetary donations there.
