"You're ready at all times," said Cub Scout Kenny McMillan.

"Be prepared" is the Boy Scout motto and nine year old Kenny McMillan, knows that very well

Last August, Kenny, his 3–year old brother Joey, and their mom were shopping at a Warwick grocery store, when she slipped and fell and was seriously injured.

"I kept yelling throughout the store, 'Someone call 911, someone call 9–11 and eventually someone called 911,'" Kenney said.

"Then Kenny leaned down to me, and told me, 'Don't worry Mom, Joey's right here. I am going to keep him safe until daddy comes," said his mom, Jennifer McMillan.

Kenny said, "What's going to happen to mommy? Is she going to be fine?"

For giving first aid to his severely injured mom and caring for his baby brother, Kenny was awarded the Boy Scout's National Certificate of Merit.

ABC6 Reporter Mark Curtis said, "And the accolades just keep on coming. On Wednesday Governor Chafee will honor Kenny for his heroism, in a ceremony at the State House.

His dad credits Boy Scout training.

"It gives them a good moral character. It shows them how to react in emergencies and it shows them how to be prepared," said his dad, Kenneth McMillan II.

Jennifer, who suffered a broken wrist, and an injured foot and hip, could not walk for months.

"My son became, not just my son, but my best friend and hero that day... And he's probably the biggest hero I will ever have in my life," Jennifer said, as she fought back tears.

Kenny was just glad to help.

"I'm pretty happy about it. I'm happy."

The National Certificate of Merit is one of the highest and rarest honors in Scouting. Only 53 were awarded last year.
