New Bedford cements ties with Irish community

The City of New Bedford now has a "twinning" community - 3,000 miles away.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell is in Youghal, Ireland, this weekend, visiting the community with ties to the movie Moby Dick.

"I look forward to cementing the ties between the two cities that began in 1954 when the town of Youghal played New Bedford in the movie version of Moby Dick," said Mayor Mitchell.

Saturday, Mitchell and Sammy Revins, the Mayor of Youghal, will sign a Charter to in the official "twinning" ceremony.

As part of that Charter, the Mayors plan to go forward exchanging cultural, touristic, social, and economic affairs to benefit residents of both communities.
